RBC Grant Helps Hockey in Harlem

Here is a story from USAHockey.com about a great New York City sports program - Ice Hockey In Harlem (IHIH) - that just received a $25,000 Royal Bank of Canada Play Hockey grant. IHIH is a non-profit organization based in Harlem, and for 25 years this program has been helping young kids mature through hockey.

The organization accepts up to 225 students — boys and girls from the ages of 4 to 17 who live north of 110th street in Harlem. The waiting list is 50 students long, and those accepted (based on a first come, first served basis) get free equipment and participate in skating clinics, scrimmages and educational sessions from October to early April at Central Park’s Lasker Rink.

“Our purpose is to not just get kids out on the ice, teach them about teamwork, but it’s also about the values and the character building that goes along with playing any organized sport,” said IHIH Executive Director John Sanful. “For those of us who grew up watching hockey, playing hockey, there’s a certain passion that we have for it, and we think it’s important to share what we know about a sport that we love and care about so much.”

Congratulations IHIH - what a great grant to receive.

Tubby the Tuba narrated by Patti Smith

Dedicated to introducing children to the world of classical music, The Little Orchestra Society has been putting on family-friendly events for 65 years.

Tubby the Tuba, a childhood favorite of punk rock musician and National Book Award-winner Patti Smith, is a whimsical piece that tells the story of a plucky tuba out searching for a song all its own.

No doubt the adults will be getting something very different from this concert than their children, but both will enjoy it.

The Flu in NYC

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently repeated its recommendation that those who have not had a flu shot should get one quickly. The FDA said that it generally takes two weeks after the vaccine is administered before it becomes effective. During that time, there is a risk of acquiring the illness. Therefore, the FDA recommends getting the vaccine as soon as possible, Philly.com reports.

A strong viral flu strain is making its way across the city. The big box corner drug stores - RiteAid, Duane Reade, Walgreens - are giving shots to adults and seniorps but not to children even though the Governor has advised everyone to get a flu shot this year. Their corporate policy prohibits staff from administering to children, as staff training has been adult oriented. As pediatrician offices are running out of supply, Doctors are encouraging a policy change as the benefits out weigh the alternative.

The New York State Nurses Association called on Mayor Michael Bloomberg to set up free flu vaccination locations in areas hit hard by Superstorm Sandy, especially because in some neighborhoods, health care facilities, doctor's offices and pharmacies are still closed. Less than a third of city residents have been vaccinated, according to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Stay healthy New York.

NYC Mayoral Candidate Announced

George McDonald, founder of the Doe Fund, launched his mayoral campaign, entering a Republican primary field that includes former Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chair Joseph Lhota and billionaire grocery-store magnate John Catsimatidis. Mr. McDonald, whose nonprofit focuses on job placement for the homeless, said his goal is full employment in New York.

It'll be sad to see Mayor Mike go, but I'm looking forward to see the campaigning begin and who might be a worthy replacement.

Winter Skin Tips

We've had some pretty warm weather, relatively speaking, in New York this past week; today we hit a high of 45F! But the mercury is dropping, and with that comes a lack of humid in the air outside and inside.

I like the winter skin tips this video had for keeping skin happy during these conflicting temps. Take a look.
