TUESDAY IN THE PARK WITH STEVE. The Public Theatre kicks off previews for “Into the Woods,” Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s 1997 Tony-winning musical about fairy tales, at the Delacorte in Central Park. It stars Donna Murphy, Amy Adams, Denis O’Hare, Ivan Hernandez and Chip Zien. It will open Aug. 9 and play through Aug. 25. 8 p.m. Free. SAMBA TIME AND THE LIVIN’ IS EASY. Luisa Maita, winner of Best New Artist at the Brazilian Music Awards, will headline at the City Winery. Tico Tales at The Players Theater

The Players Theater is presenting a free family theater production - "Tico Tales" a bi-lingual musical adaptation of traditional Costa Rican folk tales, by Michael Sgouros and Brenda Bell.

Tico Tales is a magical journey to Costa Rica through storytelling, dance and music.  Hear the call of the beautiful Quetzel bird, stomp your foot as the cast of six actors and two musicians play a drumming tale, sneak a peek into a traditional tribal dance while the "little devils" chase away the bull and celebrate love with the Indian princess Cira as she is transformed into a volcano.

Running time: Approximately 40 mins
Dates: now through to July 26, 2012

NJ Has Big Dreams in the Works

DreamWorks Animation is bringing Shrek, the animated movie character, to the Meadowlands. Kung Fu Panda will come, too. Developer Triple Five hopes to transform the unfinished husk of Xanadu, a failed entertainment complex near MetLife Stadium, into a theme park based on DreamWorks movies. The $1.75 billion project, called American Dream, will include 1.7 million square feet of retail space, an indoor ski hill, indoor skydiving, bowling, an aquarium and a 14.7-acre amusement park.

Youth Basketball Clinic


Shoot some hoops in Central Park every Saturday from April through October. From 12:00pm to 2:00pm, all young basketball lovers are invited to check out the free clinics at the North Meadow Rec Center.

The program is high energy and gives kids a great opportunity to learn the game if they are a beginner or enhance their skills if they already know the basics.  Drills, exercises and scrimmage games are main components of the clinic.  Kids will also learn sportsmanship, defense, offense, dribbling and foot work.

Clinics are free of charge and open to players of all abilities, aged 9 to 17.
Clinic participants will also have the opportunity to compete.

Shakespeare in the Park


This summer is the 50th anniversary of Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park.

A production of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods” will run July 23-Aug. 25.  In Into the Woods, a witch's curse condemns the Baker and his Wife to a life without children. They embark on a quest to find the four items required to break the spell: the cow as white as milk, the cape as red as blood, the hair as yellow as corn, and the slipper as pure as gold. Will they succeed?  And what happens after "happily ever after?" 

A Tony Award-winning masterpiece by musical theater giants Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, Into the Woods is a witty and irreverent reimagining of beloved classic fairytales: Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Cinderella.

The 2012 Shakespeare in the Park summer production of 
Into the Woods is based on the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre London Production produced by Timothy Sheader and William Village for Regent's Park Theatre Ltd.

Swedish Cottage Performance: Little Miss Muffet's Monster-Sitting Service

Little Miss Muffet’s Monster-Sitting Service tells the story of Molly Muffet (the great–great–great–great granddaughter of the original, “Little Miss Muffet”) and what happens when she ends up home alone while her parents leave for a high school reunion. Molly’s grandfather is called in to babysit but gets stranded by a snowstorm in Alaska. As a last resort, he calls in an old family friend, Aloisius Albrecht Alviss Spider (Al for short), the original spider from the famed nursery rhyme. Molly and Al quickly become friends and hatch a plan to start a baby–sitting service for baby monsters while her parents are away.

As the night progresses and baby monsters get dropped off, Molly and Al receive news that the storm of the century is heading their way. Molly, Al and the babies bunker down for what promises to be a long night filled with music, song, dance and numerous surprises.
