Did you know that today is National Poem in your pocket day?
The idea is simple: select a poem you love during National Poetry Month then carry it with you to share with co-workers, family, and friends. You can also share your poem selection on Twitter by using the hashtag #pocketpoem.
Poems from pockets will be unfolded throughout the day with events in parks, libraries, schools, workplaces, and bookstores.

Shearing of the Heather
I stumbled across this in the email inbox yesterday; I think everyone has to do this at least once in their life!!
Each April, members of the Northeast Heather Society join our horticulture staff to shear the heathers, a task that encourages dense horizontal growth and helps ensure the Fort Tryon Heather Garden is one of the finest in the northeast. You can also join the bagpipe procession through the garden, make boutonnieres and take the Heather Quiz.

10:30 A.M.–12:00 P.M.
Location:
Heather Garden (in Fort Tryon Park)
Cabrini Boulevard & Ft Washington Ave., Manhattan

Billys Bakery in Soho
Franklin between Broadway and Church is a sleepy little street but while down in the lower Soho 'hood yesterday we stumbled across a great bakery.
Designed in a vintage 40's look in pale yellow and green decor, Billy's bakery is fresh and cosy at the same time. We grabbed a cafe au lait and banana cupcakes iced in a creamed-nutella.

Spence-Chapin Thrift Store Set to Close After 60 Years on Upper East Side
After more than six decades on the Upper East Side, the Spence-Chapin Thrift Store — which raises money for the nonprofit’s adoption organization of the same name — is leaving its 1473 Third Ave. space when its lease is up in June, after more than 10 years at that address. A second branch at East 96th Street and Second Avenue closed a few years ago to make way for Second Avenue subway construction.
For the last few years, the iconic shop has been running on a deficit, the organization’s spokeswoman Leslie Case said. It could not compete with larger nonprofits that can throw more administrative heft behind their thrift stores, like Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center or the Salvation Army.
Time to get shopping....lots of great deals!
